An orange-red crystalline solid which shows a greenish-yellow fluorescence in visible light, is often used in solution as a tracer or indicator, and has antiseptic properties. Cf. fluorescin n. 2.Fluorescein is prepared by reaction of resorcinol and phthalic anhydride. Systematic name: 9-(o-carboxyphenyl)-6-hydroxy-3H-xanthen-3-one; C20H12O5.
