Etymology: < aught adj. + -ly suffix2. N.E.D. (1885) recorded an adjectival sense ‘worthy, estimable’, supported by the form autly in an earlier edition of the text cited in quot. c1400 at awkly adj. However it is now widely accepted that this word should be emended to (or read as) aucly , and belongs at awkly adj.
Obsolete.
Valiantly, courageously, boldly. Also: honourably, worthily, nobly.
