Etymology: < last adj. + resort n., after Middle French, French dernier ressort (see dernier resort n. at dernier adj. b).In in the last resort at main sense after French en dernier ressort without the possibility of appeal (1529 in Middle French), finally, definitely (1690).
A final opportunity for appeal. In later use more generally: a final expedient, something to be adopted when everything else has failed. Frequently in as a (also the) last resort, in the last resort.
