Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin onerārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin onerārius used for carrying loads or cargo (usually in navis onerāria cargo ship) < oner- , onus onus n. + -ārius -ary suffix1. With use as noun compare classical Latin onerāria, use as noun (short for navis onerāria) of feminine singular of onerārius. Compare French onéraire, adjective (late 15th cent. in Middle French). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·nĕrări) /ˈɒnərərɪ/.
