Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: latex n.
Etymology: Probably an alteration of latex n. after elastic adj., although perhaps compare names of fabrics with the ending -tex (in textile n.), as e.g. Aertex n.Lastex was used slightly earlier as the name for a brand of waterproof swimming cap; compare: 1926 Belton (Texas) Jrnl. 22 Apr. 8/1 (advt.) These Lastex Swim Kaps will give you better service and stand harder wear than any cap you have ever used.
Now historical.
A yarn formed from a combination of an elastic material with a fibre thread, used in the manufacture of corsetry, swimwear, etc. This yarn, originally comprising a core of extruded rubber wrapped with a smooth outer thread of silk, cotton, rayon, or wool, was developed in New York by James H. and Percy Adamson.
