Etymology: < classical Latin contemptiōn-, contemptiō action of despising, scorn, state of being despised, action of disregarding < contempt- , past participial stem of contemnere contemn v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare earlier contemning n., contempt n.Compare Middle French contempcion, Middle French, French contemption (early 15th cent.; apparently unattested between the mid 16th and late 19th centuries; now rare), Old Occitan contempcion (15th cent.).
Originally and chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
Disobedience or open disrespect, esp. that shown towards God, the church, or the authority of the monarch; contempt. Also as a count noun: an act or display of contempt.
