Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French contemptible; Latin contemptibilis.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French contemptible (French contemptible ; rare after the 17th cent.) deserving of contempt, despicable (late 13th cent. in Old French as contentible ), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin contemptibilis deserving of contempt, worthless (2nd cent. a.d. in legal context), in post-classical Latin also contemptuous (from 14th cent. in British sources) < contempt- , past participial stem of contemnere contemn v. + -ibilis -ible suffix.With the β. forms compare -able suffix.
