Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin contemptus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin contemptus (u -stem) contempt n. + -ous suffix. Compare earlier contemptible adj.Compare post-classical Latin contemptuosus (from 9th cent. in British sources). With the β. forms compare -eous suffix; with the γ. forms compare -ious suffix.
