单词 kwanzaa
释义

Kwanzaan.

Brit. /ˈkwanzə/, U.S. /ˈkwɑnˌzɑ/
Forms: 1900s– Kwanza, 1900s– Kwanzaa.
Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili kwanza.
Etymology: < Swahili kwanza firstly, first (infinitive of anza to begin) in the full name of the festival, matunda ya kwanza, lit. ‘first fruits (of the harvest)’ (Maulana Karenga 1966: see note below). The spelling in -aa was originally chosen to lengthen the word so that the seven children to whom the festival was first taught would each have their own letter.
Originally and chiefly North American.
A secular festival observed by many African Americans from 26 December to 1 January, as a celebration of family, community, and culture. The festival is based on the Nguzo Saba, or seven principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith). The festival was initiated in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, an African-American activist and scholar.
