释义

joughn.

Brit. /dʒɔːx/, U.S. /dʒɔx/, Manx English /dʒɔːx/, /dʒɒx/, /dʒɒk/
Origin: A borrowing from Manx. Etymon: Manx jough.
Etymology: < Manx jough (early 17th cent. as jogh, or earlier), cognate with Irish deoch drink (Early Irish deog, deoch), apparently < the same Celtic base as Welsh diod drink, beer; the Celtic base is probably ultimately derived < a verbal base with the sense ‘to drink’, further etymology unknown. In jough y nollick < Manx jough y nollick < jough + y the, of the + nollick Christmas (Early Irish notlaig < classical Latin nātālicia birthday celebration (see natalitial adj.), in post-classical Latin also used to denote Christmas). Compare the following earlier use of Manx jough as part of a longer phrase, cited in an English context:1825 Manks Advertiser 13 Oct. A certain sort of ale has been brewed in this Island, called by the natives ‘jough flodd’,—Anglice, drink for the fishermen!!
Manx English.
Alcoholic drink; esp. light ale. Now chiefly in jough y nollick: a warm spiced ale drunk at Christmas.
