Etymology: < Latin isatis, < Greek ἰσάτις the plant woad, whence a blue dye is obtained + -in suffix¹.

Chemistry.

A crystalline, reddish-orange substance (C₈H₅NO₂), of brilliant lustre, obtained from indigo by oxidation. Isatin in combination plays the part of an acid, forming isatites, e.g. potassium isatite, C₈H₄KNO₂. With bromine and chlorine it forms bromisatin (C₈H₄BrNO₂), chlorisatin, in which one or two atoms of hydrogen are replaced by equivalent quantities of bromine or chlorine. The salts of these are bromisatites and chlorisatites.
