单词 peziza
释义

Pezizan.

Brit. /pɛˈziːzə/, /pᵻˈziːzə/, U.S. /pəˈzizə/
Inflections: Plural pezizae, pezizas.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Peziza.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Peziza (J. J. Dillenius Catalogus Plantarum sponte circa Gissam Nascentium (1718) 194), alteration of classical Latin pezica stalkless fungus (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek πέζις puff-ball < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek βδεῖν and classical Latin pēdere (see pet n.1).Hellenistic Greek πέζις is recorded in Theophrastus (1. 6. 5), and in the accusative plural πέζιας in a fragment of Theophrastus in Athenaeus ( Deipnosophistae 2. 59), with variant reading πέζικας (however, a connection with ancient Greek πεζικός ‘on foot’ is problematic for both sense and form). Adopted as a genus name by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum (1753) II. 1180. The following probably ultimately reflects Hellenistic Greek πέζις:1623 H. Cockeram Eng. Dict. Pezite, a Mushrompe.
Mycology.
In early use: any of various fungi with sessile fruiting bodies. Later: a genus of discomycetous fungi of the order Pezizales (cup fungi), now restricted to fungi having cup-shaped sessile or subsessile fruiting bodies without hairs or bristles; (also peziza) a fungus of this genus.Valid publication of the genus name: E. M. Fries Systema Mycologicum (1823) II. 20.
