Etymology: modern Latin (Linnæus), < Greek ἰπ-, stem of ἶψ a worm + ὅμοιος like.
Botany.
A genus of twining or creeping plants, mostly tropical, N.O. Convolvulaceæ, with trumpet- or salver-shaped corolla; many of the species possess medicinal properties, many are cultivated as flowering plants, and one, I. Batatas, furnishes the sweet potato.
