Atmospheric Physics.
A region of the outer atmosphere of the earth, beginning at a height of 50–80 km. (30–50 miles), which contains many ions and free electrons and is capable of reflecting radio waves; a corresponding region above another planet. The ionosphere is divided conceptually into a number of layers (cf. D-layer at D n. 4c, E-layer at E n.1 6h, F-layer at F n. 4).

1926 R. Watson-Watt Let. 8 Nov. in Nature (1969) 13 Dec. 1096/1 We have in quite recent years seen the universal adoption of the term ‘stratosphere’..and..the companion term ‘troposphere’... The term ‘ionosphere’, for the region in which the main characteristic is large scale ionisation with considerable mean free paths, appears appropriate as an addition to this series.
1929 R. Watson-Watt in Q. Jrnl. Royal Meteorol. Soc. 55 278 I have suggested the name ionosphere to make the systematic group troposphere, stratosphere, ionosphere, but meanwhile the term ‘upper conducting layers’ seems to hold the field.
1934 Times 23 Feb. 20/2 Beyond lies the ionosphere, and of the layers in this we learn from the paths of radio-waves.
1959 R. D. Davies & H. P. Palmer Radio Stud. Universe iv. 66 This is difficult to explain if Jupiter is surrounded by an ionosphere similar to the Earth's.
1979 D. Adams Hitch Hiker's Guide to Galaxy iii. 23 Something was moving quietly through the ionosphere many miles above the planet.
1988 V. Capel Audio & Hi-Fi Engineer's Pocket Bk. 122 At very high frequencies (v.h.f.) a sky wave passes through the ionosphere and is lost in space.
2006 Wired May 38/2 Between a storm and the electrically charged ionosphere above, lightning can spark massive, long-lasting tendrils of colored light.
