Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: pre- prefix, mediate v.
Etymology: Apparently < pre- prefix + mediate v. (although this is first attested slightly later), after Middle French premedier (1530 in Palsgrave in an apparently isolated attestation: see quot. 1530 at sense 1). Compare earlier mediate adj.
Obsolete. rare.
1. intransitive. To be a mediator or intermediary.
