Etymology: < late Latin irrefragābilis (Pseudo-August.), < ir- (ir- prefix2) + refragārī to oppose, contest: see -able suffix. So French irréfragable (15–16th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter).
1. That cannot be refuted or disproved; incontrovertible, incontestable, indisputable, irrefutable, undeniable. (Said of a statement, argument, etc., or of the person who advances it.) Irrefragable Doctor: epithet of the scholastic philosopher and theologian Alexander Hales.
