Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin astasia; Greek ἀστασία.
Etymology: < scientific Latin astasia state or condition marked by feelings of unease or (mental) discomfort (1791 or earlier) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek ἀστασία unsteadiness < ancient Greek ἄστατος never standing still, in Hellenistic Greek also unstable (ἀ- a- prefix6 + στατός standing: see -stat comb. form1) + -ία -ia suffix1. In sense 2 after French astasie (A. Gubler 1860, in Arch. gén. de méd. 1 702; compare also the use by P. Blocq in 1888 Arch. de Neurol. 15 24).
