Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: protanopic adj., -ia suffix1.
Etymology: < protanop- (in protanopic adj.) + -ia suffix1 (compare -opia comb. form), after German Protanop protanope, protanopisch protanopic (see protanope n.). Compare earlier deuteranopia n. at deuteranope n. Derivatives, hemianopia n. Compare also later protanope n.
Ophthalmology.
A form of colour blindness characterized by a lack of, or greatly reduced perception of, light at the red end of the spectrum, resulting in inability to distinguish between red, orange, green, and certain other colours, and occurring chiefly in men as a sex-linked inherited trait. Also called red-blindness. Cf. deuteranopia n. at deuteranope n. Derivatives.
