Biochemistry and Medicine.
Any of a class of small basic proteins which occur in association with nucleic acids in the sperm of fish and other animals.Protamines are found most abundantly in fish of the families Salmonidae and Clupeidae. They are used in medicine to antagonize the anticoagulant activity of heparin and to prolong the effect of insulin.
