Etymology: In α. forms < iron n.1 + head n.1 In β. forms < iron n.1 + the plural of head n.1In sense 1 apparently so-called on account of the resemblance of the shape of the flower head on its stem to a loggerhead, an instrument comprising an iron ball on a handle (see quot. 1863 at sense 1).
1. English regional. The common or black knapweed, Centaurea nigra. Cf. hardhead n.2 5. Now rare.
