Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin antlia.
Etymology: < classical Latin antlia mechanism for drawing up water < ancient Greek ἀντλία bilge-water ( < ἄντλος hold of a ship, bilge-water, in Byzantine Greek also bucket (of uncertain origin) +-ία -y suffix3); compare ancient Greek ἀντλίον bucket. In Antlia Pneumatica at sense 1 after scientific Latin Antlia Pneumatica ( N. L. de La Caille Coelum australe stelliferum (1763) sig. Oo2v/1; compare French machine pneumatique , named by La Caille 1752, in Mém. de l'Acad. Royale des Sci. (1756) 588). With sense 2 compare earlier scientific Latin Antliata , former group name (see antliate adj.).
1. Astronomy. With capital initial. (The name of) an inconspicuous constellation of the southern hemisphere bounded by Hydra, Pyxis, Vela, and Centaurus; the Air Pump; more fully Antlia Pneumatica (now rare). Also (in form Antliae) used as postmodifier in the names of stars belonging to this constellation. Abbreviated Ant (no point).
