释义

intempestuousadj.

Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: intempestive adj., -uous suffix.
Etymology: Apparently an alteration (with suffix substitution: see -uous suffix) of intempestive adj., perhaps by association with tempestuous adj., although this is semantically and etymologically distinct. Compare earlier intempestious adj. and the discussion at that entry.Compare the early modern English homonyms intempestuous not stormy (1643 in an apparently isolated attestation < in- prefix4 + tempestuous adj.) and intempestuous very stormy or violent (1591; compare intensive use of classical Latin in- in- prefix3). Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: intemˈpestuous.
