The investiture of a newly elected pope with the mantum, a papal vestment consisting of a long red or purple cope, as part of the coronation ceremony. Also called immantatio.In the 11th and 12th centuries in particular, immantation was regarded as symbolizing the conferring of papal authority. The ceremony no longer forms part of the inauguration of a pope.
