Etymology: < meth- (in methyl n.: see note s.v. meth- comb. form) + -a- connective (compare -i- connective) + qu- , -a- , -l- , and -one (in quinazolinone in the systematic name of the compound: compare -one suffix 1).Compare also the less common methoqualone , in same sense, with a different connecting vowel (compare -o- connective).

Pharmacology.

A hypnotic and sedative drug derived from quinazoline and generally used in the form of the hydrochloride; 2-methyl-3-(2-methylphenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone.Methaqualone is now no longer sold legally in most countries because of its potential for abuse. Cf. Mandrax n., Quaalude n.
