Etymology: < house n.1 + father n. In sense 1 probably after German Hausvater (15th cent. in this sense, as husfater , hūßvatter , haußvatter ; 1550 (though rare before 19th cent.) in sense 2) or its model classical Latin paterfamiliās paterfamilias n. Compare Dutch huisvader (1588 in Kiliaan as huysvader ), Middle Low German hūsvāder , Icelandic húsfaðir (1584 in the earliest Icelandic version of the Bible). Compare later housemother n.
1. The male head of a household or family; a father regarded as chief provider and protector of a family. Now rare. Cf. housemother n. 1.
