Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian prezidium.
Etymology: < Russian prezidium < German Präsidium presiding body, committee (19th cent.) < classical Latin praesidium garrison (see presidy n.). Compare French Présidium (1918; also Praesidium).
Originally: the presiding body in the Russian government set up after the revolution of 1905. Later: the presiding body or standing committee in a number of institutions in the Soviet Union and other communist countries. Also in extended use.In the Soviet Union, the most important of these were the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet (the executive body of State government) and the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (replacing the Politburo: cf. Politburo n.).
