Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish presidio.
Etymology: < Spanish presidio garrison (1385), penal settlement (1604) < classical Latin praesidium garrison (see presidy n.). Compare Portuguese presídio (a1575), Italian presidio (first half of the 14th cent.). Compare also French préside garrison, troop, escort (1542; < Italian), fortified post established by the Spanish (1556; < Spanish), penal settlement (1787). Compare earlier presidy n. 2.
Chiefly U.S.
A garrison, a fortified settlement, esp. one formerly established by the Spanish in areas under Spanish control to protect settlements and missions. Also: a Spanish penal settlement in a foreign country.
