单词 hardishrew
释义

hardishrewn.

Brit. /ˈhɑːdɪʃruː/, U.S. /ˈhɑrdiˌʃru/
Forms:

α. 1600s hardieshrew, 1600s hardishrow, 1600s (1700s– English regional (west midlands)) hardishrew, 1600s–1700s hardyshrew; English regional (west midlands) 1800s– artishow, 1800s– artishrew, 1800s– hardishraow, 1900s– artisrobe.

β. 1600s–1700s hardshrew.

γ. English regional (west midlands) 1800s– artistrow, 1800s– hardistraw, 1800s– hardistrow, 1800s– hartistraw, 1900s– ardiestraw.

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hardy adj., shrew n.1
Etymology: Apparently < hardy adj. + shrew n.1, perhaps as a folk-etymological alteration of earth-shrew n. at earth n.1 Compounds 8a (although this is first attested slightly later). In β. forms apparently with alteration of the first element after hard adj. The γ. forms, which are not paralleled at shrew n.1, apparently show development of excrescent -t- . Compare slightly later earth-shrew n. at earth n.1 Compounds 8a.
Now English regional (west midlands) and rare.
A shrew (genus Sorex).‘Field-mouse’ in quot. 1686 should probably be taken in a broad sense (which could include shrews), not as a reference to the genus Apodemus (see field mouse n. at field n.1 Compounds 3).
