Etymology: < post-classical Latin Antoninianus, denoting a coin (4th cent.), use as noun of masculine of Antoninianus (adjective) of or relating to one of the Antonine emperors (3rd cent.) < classical Latin Antōnīnus , a cognomen of several Roman emperors (see Antonine n.) + -iānus -ian suffix.Nineteenth-century numismatists took the term antoninianus from the Historia Augusta and applied it to a coin first issued under Caracalla (on whose cognomen see note at Antonine n.), for which the original name (if any) is unknown. In the context of the Historia Augusta, Antoniniani seems to refer to both gold and silver coins produced under the Antonine emperors of the late 2nd century a.d. (presumably special in some way, probably because of their higher precious metal content). The 3rd-century antoninianus was silver (increasingly debased). The plural form reflects the Latin plural.
