Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French doucin.
Etymology: Probably < French douçain, (also, with suffix substitution: compare -in suffix2) doucin variety of wild apple used as a grafting rootstock (although this is first attested later: 1680) < doux sweet (see douce adj.) + -ain , suffix forming nouns (see -an suffix).Compare Italian dolcigno, dolcino (adjective) designating a variety of sweet apple (1588 or earlier as dolciano; also as noun denoting such an apple).
