Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish antojito.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish antojito < Spanish antojo strong desire for something (13th cent.; < post-classical Latin ante oculum before one's eyes (5th cent.) < classical Latin ante before (see ante- prefix) + oculum , accusative of oculus eye: see oculus n.) + -ito , diminutive suffix (see -et suffix1).Not fully naturalized in English.
Chiefly U.S.
Usually in plural. In Mexican cuisine: a small dish served as an appetizer or as part of a main meal, or as a snack (often as street food).
