Etymology: < phanta- (in phantasm n.) + -scope comb. form. With sense 2 compare earlier phantasmascope n., phenakistoscope n.
1. An apparatus for demonstrating certain phenomena of binocular vision, consisting of a pair of cards, each with a horizontal slit, one placed in front of the other, through which an observer views a pair of images which merge into one image when the observer focuses on a mark on the second card. Obsolete.
