Etymology: < scientific Latin Phaneroptera, genus name (J. G. Audinet-Serville in Ann. sci. nat. 22 (1831) 158; < phanero- phanero- comb. form + ancient Greek πτερόν wing: see ptero- comb. form) + -id suffix³. Compare German Phaneropteriden, plural noun (1878 or earlier), and scientific Latin Phaneropteridae, family name (1890 or earlier).
