Etymology: < haplo- comb. form + -odont comb. form. In senses A. 2 and B. after scientific Latin Haplodontidae, former family name (1876 or earlier).The mountain beaver was validly named Aplodontia by J. Richardson in 1829 ( Zool. Jrnl. 4 334), but the name was emended by later writers to Haplodon, Haplodontia, and other forms. The family name has also had many forms, the earliest being Haploodontini (Brandt 1855); the correct modern form is Aplodontiidae (Thomas 1897).
