单词 mother bunch
释义

Mother Bunchn.

Brit. /ˌmʌðə ˈbʌn(t)ʃ/, U.S. /ˌməðər ˈbən(t)ʃ/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mother Bunch.
Etymology: < the name of Mother Bunch, an alehouse keeper in Elizabethan London, renowned for serving particularly strong ale, and reputed to have lived to a great age. In sense 2 after bunch n.1 1a.That the name of Mother Bunch was long remembered is evidenced by its later appearance in several book titles (e.g. Pasquil's Jests, mixed with Mother Bunches Merriments (1604), History of Mother Bunch of the West: containing, many rarities out of her Golden Closet of Curiosities (?1750), Mother Bunch's Closet newly broke open: containing rare secrets of art and nature, tried and experienced by learned philosophers, and recommended to all ingenious young men and maidens (?1790), Celebrated Fairy Tales of Mother Bunch (1817), Beauty & the Beast; or, Harlequin and Old Mother Bunch. Grand comic Christmas Pantomime (1869)), although it is clear from these that it had come in time to represent little more than the generalized stereotype of old wife and teller of tales.
1. Probably: strong ale (as proverbially served by Mother Bunch). Obsolete.
