Etymology: modern Latin, < Greek ἀσπιδ-, ἀσπίς shield + -istra, after tupistra.Spellings such as the following, representing nonstandard pronunciations, were formerly frequent:1895 Daily News 4 Dec. 6/7 The broad leaves of the aspidestria.1899 Westm. Gaz. They are just moderate-sized palms, ferns, and aspidestra.
1. A plant of the genus so called, belonging to the family Liliaceæ and native to China and Japan; frequently grown as a pot-plant, and often regarded as a symbol of dull middle-class respectability.
