Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ὀνοματο-.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀνοματο-, combining form (in e.g. ὀνοματοποιεῖν to make or coin names: see onomatopoesis n.) of ὀνόματ- , ὄνομα name ( < the same Indo-European base as name n.); compare -o- connective.Earliest in the mid 16th cent. in the Latin loan onomatopoeia n. Formations in English are found from the mid 17th cent. (apparently earliest in onomatomancy n.), but are rare before the mid 19th cent. Combined chiefly with second elements ultimately of Greek origin. Compare post-classical Latin onomato- (in the isolated 17th-cent. formation onomatologia onomatology n.), and French onomato- (formations in which are found from the mid 16th cent.).
