Etymology: Apparently < god n. + Old English fyrht, past participle of fyrhtan fright v. Compare Old English godes fyrhtu fear of god. Compare Old Saxon godforht , Old High German gotforht , Gothic gudafaurhts (compare Old English forht afraid: see fright n.). Compare later Godfrighty adj. and the further Germanic forms cited at that entry.In form Godefriht with -e- connective.
