单词 murre
释义

murren.

Brit. /məː/, U.S. /mər/
Forms: 1500s–1600s 1800s– murre, 1700s merre, 1700s–1800s mur, 1700s–1800s murr, 1800s muir.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Origin uncertain: probably imitative of the adult guillemot's call, and transferred to the other species. Compare marrot n. Compare also Welsh mora (1695), morra (1889, Pembrokeshire), Cornish murr (20th cent.).J. Fleming ( Hist. Brit. Animals (1828) 134) and later writers give a form murse, perhaps due to a misprint or misreading, but compare the Welsh plural form mwrs (1898 or earlier). The regional (Donegal) term murren razor-bill may be an independent parallel formation (a derivation from an unattested Irish *muir-éan, lit. ‘sea-bird’, has also been suggested). In Britain, frequently associated spec. with Cornwall.
Originally (now British regional): any of various guillemots and other auks, esp. the razorbill, Alca torda. Later chiefly spec. (North American): a guillemot of the genus Uria, having a white breast.
