Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese goban.
Etymology: < Japanese goban game board, go-board (10th cent.; 1603 as gobã in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam; < Middle Chinese (8th cent. or earlier); compare Chinese qípán and its elements kind of board game (see wei ch'i n.) and pán plate, tray, game board). Compare go n.2The form gobang reflects a Japanese syllabic nasal in the second syllable, usually represented in transliteration by -n (in word-final position). Japanese goban is not used to refer to any game (only to the board); the Japanese name for the game is gomoku-narabe, lit. ‘five-eye line-up’ (also shortened to gomoku).
A game played on a go board, in which each player seeks to be the first to place five counters in a row.
