Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Ramsar.
Etymology: < Ramsar (Persian Rāmsar), the name of a town in northern Iran where the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat was signed in 1971. Compare German Ramsar-Konvention (1974 or earlier).

1. attributive. Of, designating, or protected under a treaty concerning the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and their resources, developed and signed by participating nations at a convention held at Ramsar, Iran, in February 1971.The original emphasis of the treaty was on conserving the wetland habitats of wildfowl, but it now has a broader remit covering all aspects of wetland conservation.
