Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Ramsch.
Etymology: < German Ramsch card game in which jacks are trumps and the player who takes the greatest number of points loses (late 19th cent. or earlier in this sense) < French ramas heap, jumble, action of gathering (see ramass n.). Compare earlier rounce n.2, and see discussion at that entry.German Ramsch junk, jumble, worthless trash (18th cent.; of uncertain origin) is now generally regarded as a different word.
Cards.
A game (commonly played as a default round in the game of skat in the event that every player passes) in which jacks are trumps and the player who takes the greatest number of points loses.
