Etymology: Of obscure etymology; Pogatscher regards it as probably < popular Latin *gladīna, altered form of Latin gladiolus ‘sword-lily’ (Lewis & Short), diminutive of gladius sword, from the shape of the leaves. The form glader which appears in various dictionaries of the 18th cent. (Phillips, Johnson, etc.) may have been originally due to a misprint.

Now chiefly dialect.
