Gilderoyn.

Brit. /ˈɡɪldərɔɪ/, U.S. /ˈɡɪldəˌrɔɪ/
Forms: 1800s– Gilderoy, 1800s– Gilroy.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymons: proper name Gilderoy, Gilroy.
Etymology: < Gilderoy (also Gilroy), the nickname of Patrick MacGregor (executed in 1636), notorious Scottish outlaw and subject of a popular ballad first found in the second half of the 17th cent. The nickname Gilderoy (or Gilroy ) is an anglicized form of Scottish Gaelic Gille Ruadh ( < gille young man (see ghillie n.) + ruadh red adj.), apparently with reference to his hair colour. Compare the Irish surname discussed at gillaroo n. The phrases as high as Gilderoy's kite and higher than Gilderoy's kite may be extensions of as high as a kite (although this is first attested slightly later) and higher than a kite at high adv. Phrases 1, respectively. With the line cited in quot. 1888 compare the following passage from the ballad (not all early versions of the ballad use the word high):1765 T. Percy Reliques I. 303 Tull Edenburrow they led him thair, And on a gallows hung..They hung him high aboon the rest..My handsome Gilderoy.
