Etymology: < ancient Greek οἰκία (Cretan and Locrian ϝοικία ) house ( < οἶκος house (see oecist n.) + -ία -ia suffix¹) + -ous suffix. In the early formations diœcious adj. and monoecious adj. after scientific Latin Dioecia Diœcia n., Monoecia Monoecia n. Compare German -oecisch (formations in which are found from at least the late 19th cent.).Earliest found in diœcious adj. and monoecious adj. (mid 18th cent.). In the 1880s came autoecious adj., metoecious adj., and paroecious adj. (1882), modelled on German.
