Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: geo- comb. form, -oid suffix.
Etymology: < geo- comb. form + -oid suffix, after German Geoid ( J. B. Listing Ueber unsere jetzige Kenntniss der Gestalt u. Größe der Erde (1872) 9).
A notional surface approximating the shape of the earth at mean sea level, being at every point perpendicular to the direction of gravity at that point; a level or equipotential surface approximating the mean level of the undisturbed sea.The geoid is a more accurate but more complex figure than the ellipsoid usually used for purposes of computation.
