Etymology: Of obscure origin; a remarkable similarity of form is presented by modern Icelandic skoppara-kringla spinning-top, < skoppa to spin like a top; compare Middle Swedish skoppa to jump, run about, Middle Dutch, modern Dutch schoppen to swing, sea-saw; also scope v.²
