Etymology: Shortened < generation n.
1. Usually with capital initial. Generation; spec. as the first (or occasionally second) element in compounds referring to demographic groups regarded as having shared attitudes, values, or experiences. Cf. generation n. 3.From the 1990s onwards chiefly used in Gen X n., Gen Y n., Gen Z n., and derived words: see the main entries for more information.
