Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French casse-burgo, cazeburgot, casse-burgau.

Etymology: < Louisiana French casse-burgo (1758), cazeburgot (1753), casse-burgau (1803) < casser to break (see cass v.) + burgau, burgo, name of a species of shellfish (1563 in Middle French; of unknown origin). The fish name probably originated in France, being transferred to the American fish: for evidence from French regional varieties and further discussion see W. A. Read Notes on 'gaspergou' in Amer.
