Origin: A borrowing from French; perhaps partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: French adjouter.
Etymology: < Middle French adjouter (French ajouter , †adjouter ) adjust v.1 The spelling was perhaps reinforced by folk-etymological association with classical Latin adiūtāre to help (see adjutant n. and adj.); Johnson (1755) gives this etymology for the English verb, and apparently on the basis of this etymology, glosses the verb as ‘to help’.
Obsolete. rare.
